• In videos we create that month

It’s a great way for designers, photographers, painters and other types of artists to find an additional outlet for their work to help promote themselves, increase their SEO, and have an additional reference/credit in their portfolio.

How you win?

Submit an entry of your work to the contest. It can be a photograph, illustration, web design, or…the sky’s really the limit.

Throughout the month, visitors will be invited to vote on all submissions through a simple up and down mechanism.

You’re welcome to let your friends know through Facebook, Twitter, etc. about it so they can come and vote for you.

At the end of the contest, the ten highest scored submissions will invited by SmarMargin.com to submit a portfolio of no less than twelve pieces. These portfolios will be reviewed by SmartMargin at least five will be showcased, with the top portfolio showcased ‘above the fold’ on the home page.

A few rules

The first contest will run from July 24-Aug. 31. After that each contest will run from the first to the last day of the calendar month.

Entry into a contest is free. Each member way enter up to 6 images per monthly competition.

All images should be no larger than 1MB in size. Images must be uploaded in JPG or PNG format only. After uploading an image into the Contest, the image may not be altered, modified, or replaced.

All submitted images for all Contests must be your own original work. Photographs taken by spouse, family, friends, or anyone other than entrant are prohibited. Violators will be banned from future competitions. Contestants acknowledge that they have a signed release from any recognizable person to publicly display the image.

SmartMargin.com reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to remove from its site any photo that is unsuitable, obscene, pornographic, violent, or offensive in any form. Titles and descriptions may not contain any profanity or inappropriate language. Violators will be banned from future competitions.

Members are responsible for their own User Content. Comments must be limited to actual critiquing. A member agrees that they will not post any comments that are insulting, vulgar, harassing, or threatening. Personal insults or obscene remarks are strictly prohibited.

Judges may disqualify an entry for any reason, at their sole discretion. The decision of the judges on all matters relating to the competition is final and binding.

Welcome to Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 in association with Canon. This week we launch Round one, Shooting trees, where the first-prize winner will receive a fantastic Canon EOS 60D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.

Whether you are a regular APOY entrant or have never entered before, now is your chance to submit an image and see if you can win one of Canon’s flagship cameras.

We’re looking for original, imaginative and technically well-executed images that explore the theme in an exciting way. We have included a table outlining the themes for each round, plus the closing dates and the issues in which the results will appear. In the first issue and online every month we will publish a brief explaining the criteria for that round.

Our judges will narrow down the images to a shortlist of 50, and will look again at the images and award points for creativity, technical excellence and how far the image fulfils the brief. The three images with the most points will win the top three prizes for that round. The top 30 highest scoring images will be published in the magazine at the end of the month and the scores from the top 50 finalists will be added to our league table. The names of the top 50 finalists and their points scores will be posted on our website after each round. The person with the most points after the final round will be crowned Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 and win £5,000 worth of Canon equipment.

The monthly prize is a two-night midweek break (Sunday to Thursday night) for two people at Amberley Castle, a von Essen hotel in West Sussex . Hidden away for 900 years near the picturesque village of Amberley in the chalk South Downs, Amberley Castle is a magnificent historical treasure with beautiful landscaped gardens and 19 luxurious hotel bedrooms and suites, many with four-poster beds and all featuring Whirlpool bathrooms.

The hotel’s facilities include two restaurants, lounge areas, tennis court, croquet lawn, gardens and lakes, 18-hole professional putting course and a stunning thatched-roof tree house complete with rope bridge.
