The British Wildlife Photography Awards were established in 2009. The key aims of the Awards are to:

Recognise the talents of photographers practicing in the UK, while at the same time highlight the great wealth and diversity of Britain’s natural history.
Celebrate British wildlife, in all its beauty and diversity, through a collection of inspirational photographs.
Showcase the very best of our nature photography to a wide audience and engage all ages with evocative and powerful imagery.
Encourage discovery, exploration, conservation and enjoyment of our natural heritage.
Raise awareness about British biodiversity, species and habitats.

Entries must have been taken in the United Kingdom of Great Britain Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Images can be of native or migrant wild species. Also non-indigenous wild species that reside permanently in the UK. British wildlife subjects photographed in a studio setting or a captive environment are eligible provided this information is supplied when submitting images. Exotic wildlife photographed in British zoos, safari parks or similar locations, and domestic pets are not eligible.

USAGE RIGHTS: By entering the competition, you grant BWPA and its sponsors and supporters a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the images for any purpose directly connected with the competition. This may include, but is not limited to: inclusion in a book of winning and commended images; display at exhibitions; display on a web browser for judging purposes; on the BWPA website and on the websites of sponsors and supporters; for use in press releases to be distributed to national, regional & specialist press giving information about or promoting the competition.

Entrants also agree that the organisers can sub-license images to the media for reproduction in connection with the competition and exhibition only.

BWPA will make every reasonable effort to ensure that name credits are given to any photograph published in any medium.

Free usage of any photograph will not be permitted by BWPA, or any of its partners or sponsors outside of the scope of the competition and exhibition.

There is no plan envisaged by BWPA, or any of its partners or sponsors, to create a general commercial library of the images entered into this competition.

Commercial use of images not directly associated with the competition will be at the entrants’ discretion and with their permission and, on granting such permission, will be subject to a reasonable payment.

For any use that falls outside this remit, royalties will be discussed & negotiated with the photographer concerned.

Canadian International Digital Photography Award

Today, Thursday 2 February, the World Photography Organisation announces the shortlist for the 2012 Sony World Photography Awards. The Awards celebrate the very best in photography from around the world, from the next generation of emerging photographers through to the established masters of the art.

The 2012 competition has garnered increased worldwide interest with over 112,000 entries from 171 countries, with the shortlisted images depicting the stories of extraordinary lives from around the world. The Professional competition reflects a turbulent year of global events with the war in Libya; the Greek and European economic crisis; the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan and the fall of Gaddafi, in the Photojournalism & Documentary categories. The shortlist for the Fine Art and Commercial categories gets to the very heart of daily life – a small sheep-farming community in Iceland; the rice harvest in South China; a religious pilgrimage in Poland and gold diggers in Chile.

This year the honorary jury found the quality of work exceptionally strong across all categories, discovering many photographers new to the Sony World Photography Awards roster. Manuel Geerinck (Belgium); Lee Chee Wai (China); Alejandro Cartagena (Mexico), Irina Werning (Argentina); Gwenn Dubourthoumieu (Republic of the Congo) and Simon Norfolk (UK), are but a few of the new names to place as finalists and shortlisted photographers.

Returning photographers from previous years, include 2010 Professional Landscape winner, Peter Franck (Germany); who this year is a finalist in three categories; 2011 Professional Contemporary Issues and Current Affairs winner, Javier Arcenillas (Spain); and Chan Kwok Hung (Hong Kong) whose stunningly dramatic image ‘Buffalo Race’ won the Overall Open Competition in 2011.

In being shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards, photographers can now look forward to the invaluable support of the World Photography Organisation, which includes having their work exhibited at a major exhibition at London’s Somerset House, to coincide with the award ceremony in April 2012.

The annual Sony World Photography Awards ceremony and gala dinner will take place on 26 April at the Hilton Hotel in London’s Park Lane. The awards celebration will once again take place alongside World Photo, London, a month-long event which brings an eclectic mix of photographic events for all to enjoy. The opening weekend of World Photo London will be held at Somerset House from 27 – 30 April with selected events including portfolio reviews, workshops, symposiums and the Sony World Photography Awards winners’ exhibitions, which continue through to 20 May 2012. Honorary Judges for the 2012 Awards and other international industry experts will be leading many of the festival events.

The 2012 Photocrati Fund Competition is now open!
Winner and Top Finalists to be announced in June 2012

What is the Photocrati Fund?

The Photocrati Fund offers $5000 grants to photographers to undertake important humanitarian and environmental photography projects. Our goal is to identify outstanding photographers and to provide the resources necessary to pursue projects that will have a tangible and positive effect on the world.

The 2012 Photocrati Fund competition is open from January 2012 through April 1, 2012. The 2012 Photocrati Fund award will be announced at the Look3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia in June 2012. The grant winner will become a Photocrati Fellow for the calendar year from the announcement of his/her award until the announcement of the following year’s award.

Award decisions will be made by the Photocrati Fund Board, a prestigious panel that includes some of the world’s best-known environmental and cultural photographers. We are still confirming 2012 judges.

Eligibility

This grant is intended for both pro and emerging photographers. The grant is open to photographers over 21 years of age from any country worldwide, but applicants should have a proven ability to produce outstanding imagery and coherent photo essays, as well as the background necessary to carry out the proposed project. This means that for photographers planning to complete a project in a country other than their own country of origin, there should be a clear demonstration of preparation for work in that country (i.e. proper visas, contacts, language training, etc.).

Application Submission Guidelines

Application Deadline: Sunday April 1, 2012 at 11:59pm (Mountain Time, USA).
There are no application fees for this grant.

Each submission may contain only one project proposal. Each applicant may apply only once per submission cycle. Applications are not carried over to the following year. All applications must be submitted in English, online to the following email address: fund@photocrati.com. Please include the words 2012 PHOTOCRATI FUND in the subject of the email.

Please proofread to avoid typos and grammatical errors.

Only applications that meet ALL SUBMISSION CRITERIA will be judged. Once the application and proposal has been submitted, content changes are not allowed. Please double check all of your materials before submitting your application. The Photocrati Fund is not responsible for misdirected submissions. Applicants should save copies of their application for their own records.

Only applications submitted according to grant application specifications will be considered. Applicants should not send any hard copies or printed materials (no prints, books, CDs/DVDs or transparencies). The Photocrati Fund Panel will not review any of these materials, and they cannot be returned to applicants.

The application consists of just two items: a one-page project statement and bio, and a link to your online portfolio submitted via email to: fund@photocrati.com. Please include the words 2012 PHOTOCRATI FUND in the subject of your email.

A big change from previous years: We do not accept links to password protected galleries, or to Flickr, Picasa, or other photo sharing sites. You should have a professional-style website. (There are many wonderful free professional-style websites available, — such as WordPress — that are easy to set up. If you want to keep your gallery separate from your other work, you can create a specific, non-public link and send that to us with your application.
Project Statement and Bio
The project statement should be 1-page in Microsoft Word (or compatible) format or a PDF. Please follow these formatting guidelines. It helps our judges to quickly evaluate the hundreds of applications in a systematic manner.

The personal statement should describe the proposed project in detail, including:

Who or what will be photographed?
Why is this project important? Include historical, environmental, or cultural background to the project as appropriate. You should display good substantive knowledge of your subject matter.
What positive consequences might result from this project? We are interested in projects that will have a tangible impact or contribution.
What background and preparation do you have that will enable you to carry out the project? This should include a description of your photographic training or background as well as your knowledge or training related to the subject matter of your project (i.e., language or cultural study, previous experience in the specified country or location, environmental or biological background, and contacts with a specific local organization or experts with whom you wish to work, etc).
If the proposed project will take place in a country other than your own, please describe your preparations for working in the proposed project location (i.e. visa preparations, local contacts, health vaccinations, language training, etc.).
How do you plan to spend the grant funds? Please include a rough budget.

Note: In our experience, many applicants underestimate the amount of time and preparation that is required to prepare a good one-page project statement. The fact that this statement is only one page means you must work even harder to make sure that all the relevant information is included in a concise and still-readable way.

The most successful statements are those that have received a great deal of attention. Applicants think carefully about what to include, revise their statements through multiple drafts, perhaps have friends or colleagues provide feedback, and they take special care to ensure that there are absolutely no typos or grammatical errors.

This single page is all we have to evaluate you, your preparation, and your project, so please give it special care and attention.

Each applicant should include on their Project Statement and Bio a URL (web address) to an online gallery of a coherent set of 20-30 images based around a theme or project (preferably related to the project or theme/concept proposed in your application).

Carrying out an effective photography project requires not just creative and technical mastery of photography, but also the ability to focus on a single project over time. You need to take time to develop knowledge about your subject matter, build any necessary relationships, and to invest the time to be present when the best photo opportunities present themselves. Your portfolio should display these qualities. We are not looking for a hodge-podge of individual photographs of sunsets, flowers, or travel scenes.

Images displayed in the online portfolio or website MUST BE TAKEN BY THE APPLICANT. Any applicant receiving a grant on the basis of images taken by someone else will be liable to repay the grant’s full amount to the Photocrati Fund.

Selection Criteria

Following the application deadline (Sunday April 1, 2012 at 11:59pm Mountain Standard Time (USA)), Photocrati Fund staff will compile all completed applications that adhere to all submission guidelines.

Photocrati Fund staff will screen applications and remove any that do not meet the application criteria or which are unlikely to be competitive. The remaining applications will be submitted to the Photocrati Fund Board for consideration.

Selection of the grantee will be based on the Board’s determination, in its sole discretion, of the following:

• Photographic skill, background and promise of the applicant (in terms of photographic vision and technique) based on the applicant’s images in his/her web portfolio.

• The degree to which the applicant’s non-photographic background and training has prepared him/her to undertake the project.

• The environmental or humanitarian significance of the project and its potential positive contributions.

• The feasibility and viability of the completion of the proposed project within the projected time frame and with the grant funding.

• The quality of the overall application packet.

Notification of Award

Winners of the grant will be notified after the judging, which should be completed by mid-May. Grant winners may share the news of their winning proposal with others involved with the project, but are asked to keep news of their award confidential until the public announcement at the Look3 Festival of the Photograph (and on the Photocrati website) in June.

Disbursement of Funds, Project Report, Photo Essay and Deadline for Completion of Project

Photocrati Fund Grants are in the amount of $5,000. The funds are intended to cover the costs of travel, lodging, and expenses for up to one-month of full time photography. If you are doing a project close to home, then the funds do not need to be spent on travel and lodging, but a case must be made for how they will be spent. Your project may also be longer than one month – just make a case for the appropriate duration for your project.

The funds will be disbursed in two portions. Photocrati Fellows will receive $4000 up-front prior to the project. The remaining $1000 will be disbursed to the Grantee upon completion of the project and upon receipt of a Project Report and an image portfolio from the project.

The Grantee is expected to provide a brief follow-up report upon completion of the project that describes how the project progressed, and which provides a detailed explanation of how funds were used. Receipts should be provided for all expenditures over $50. Grant recipients are advised to keep conscientious records of expenses.

Along with the Project Report, the Fellow should submit a final Image Portfolio of 20-30 images. These can be presented in an online gallery or sent to Photocrati Fund staff via email or FTP. These images should be 800 pixels in the longest dimension and they should be accompanied by detailed captions. The resulting Photo Essay will be displayed on Photocrati.com for at least one year following the project.

The Grantee will have 12 months from the announcement of the award to complete his or her project and to provide Photocrati Fund staff with a Project Report and captioned Photo Essay of 20-30 images from the Photocrati Fund project.

Copyright and Use of Images

The Grantee (i.e. the award winner/photographer) retains all copyright and ownership of images resulting from the project, including the right to sell, print, or distribute images as he or she sees fit. By accepting the grant, the Grantee (the award winner) agrees, however, to give Photocrati a worldwide, non-exclusive right to display images included in the Grantee’s Photo Essay on the Photocrati.com website. The Grantee also gives Photocrati the right to use the resulting imagery on its website, in printed materials, or in galleries for the purpose of promoting the Photocrati Fund.

The imagery produced by the grantee may be licensed (and sold) to others by Grantee (the award winner), with the understanding and explicit agreement that the images may also be used by Photocrati in the manner mentioned above.

Other Important Notes
Taxable Compensation

The Photocrati Grant is considered compensation. As such, the amount of funding that the grant recipient claims for their expenses may be subject to withholding tax. American citizens or residents should be prepared to provide a US Taxpayer Identification Number shortly after their grant is awarded, before the Awardee can receive the grant.

Photocrati will provide grant recipients outside the US with information and assistance in securing this number if they do not already have such identification. Grant recipients living in the US will be supplied with appropriate reporting information in the form of a 1099. Grant recipients living in other countries will receive 1042 income reporting forms.
Privacy

Photocrati and Photocrati Fund staff along with the Photocrati Fund Panel will make every possible effort to keep applications confidential and private. Applicant names and contact information will never be shared with individuals outside of the Photocrati Fund, without expressed written permission from the grant recipients.

Materials and ideas contained within the application will not be used by Photocrati, the Photocrati Fund, or by the Photocrati Fund Panel for any purpose other than the grant review and selection process, without expressed written permission from the grant recipients. Grant recipient images may, however, be used for publicity (as outlined in this document).
Communication with Applicant

The Photocrati Fund staff and/or Photocrati Fund Panel may contact grant applicants for further communication regarding their submitted application.
Updates and Changes to the Grant

As this is only the third year for offering the grant, some small changes in procedures may be necessary. Photocrati reserves the right to amend grant rules and submission guidelines for the Photocrati Fund. If amendments are made, they will be posted no later than 30 days prior to the application deadline (Sunday April 1, 2012 – 11:59PM GMT).
Agreement

All entrants by their participation, agree to be bound by these Official Rules. Photocrati reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who violates these rules, and any subsequent entries of the disqualified entrant. The laws of the United States apply to and govern this grant award and any claims must be raised and resolved in the United States. Additionally, entrants and the grant recipient agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless Photocrati, Photocrati Fund, and Photocrati Fund Panel, their affiliates, officers, directors and employees from any liability, claims, or damages arising out of their participation in the promotion and the acceptance, use, misuse, or possession of any grant. All grant recipients, by accepting the grant, agree to the use of their name or likeness for advertising or publicity purposes without compensation, and upon request, to provide consent to such use in writing.

Photocrati is not responsible for printing or typographical errors in any contest-related materials; for stolen, lost, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete, illegible, or postage-due mail or entries; or for transactions that are processed late or incorrectly; or are lost due to computer or electronic malfunction. Photocrati reserves the right to cancel or modify the competition if fraud or technical failures compromise the integrity of the offer as determined by Photocrati in its sole discretion.

THE VIPA 2012 – CALL FOR ENTRIES

KUNSTNETZWERK (modern contemporary art gallery and network), Raed Bawayah (photographer), in collaboration with « Eyes-On » European Month of Photography Vienna, are pleased to announce the Open Call #1st edition of the Vienna International Photographic Awards «VIPA 2012 » for documentary photography.
Participation is open to professional, non-professional and student photographers from any country. Submission must be a single photo or a series, which focus on documentary photo-reportages such as social, cultural, political or environmental issues.
Besides the total value of 7.000 EUR in money prizes the short-listed winners will be published in the VIPAʼs official catalogue. The 3 finalists will take part in a group exhibition in November 2012 in Vienna (during the European Month of Photography). The awards will be divided into three sections: 1st prize (4.000 EUR), 2nd prize (2.000 EUR) and 3rd prize (1.000 EUR). The awards ceremony and the group exhibition opening will be held on the 15th November 2012 in Vienna.

The overall winner of this year’s competition was Lee Jeffries, a Manchester-based amateur photographer who submitted an image of a homeless man called “What we are…”

“I’m incredibly honoured and surprised as the kind of shots I take don’t usually win competitions,” said Lee.

“I took this shot last November – I was walking around Manchester when I noticed something about this guy’s eyes. There was something wrong with them, obviously, but there was a quality about them too… I try to get an almost religious feel to my shots and I think it comes through in this image, with the way the light falls on his face. Anyway, winning this prize is a huge honour.”

Migration: Stories of a Journey – photography competition

I. The work of each applicant should address the following concept:

II. Artwork
1. Each applicant will need to submit a photographic essay consisting of three digital
images that explore one of the following:
a) migrants’ struggle and difficulties as they seek a better life in their adopted country.
or
b) migrants’ accomplishments and contributions as successful members and leaders in their
adopted country.
2. Images may be digitally enhanced for colour/contrast/brightness, but not manipulated.
3. The works submitted must be unpublished. Applicants must warrant that the
photograph they are submitting is their own work and that they own the copyright for it.
4. Each applicant will retain the copyright of their own work.

III. Fees
There are no fees to enter the competition.

IV. Participants
1. The prize is open to photographers of all nationalities based in the EEC.
2. Only one entry per person. Illegible or incomplete entries will not be accepted. Please note
that proof of transmission will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

Entering the contest
Professional photographers and photojournalists are invited to enter the contest.

Contest timeline
The World Press Photo Contest is an annual competition in which the jury looks for the best photographs made during a calendar year. Details about the photo contest, as well as names of the contest judges, are announced in October/November.

The photo contest judging begins at the end of January and the winners are announced in the second week of February. The annual Awards Days, a celebration of the prizewinners, takes place in Amsterdam at the end of April or beginning of May. The first edition of the multimedia contest in 2011 followed a similar timeline, but a different entry procedure. Details about the next multimedia contest setup will be announced later.

When to send in photos
Photographers can enter their pictures to the 2012 World Press Photo contest starting at the beginning of December. The deadline for submitting entries to the contest is 12 January 2012, 23.59 Central European Time.

Who can participate
Professional photographers, their representatives and publications for which work has been produced are eligible to enter photographs and series of photographs.

How to participate
A multi-lingual website for uploading entries will be available online in December. Participants first need to register for a user account and password, which can be requested between 1 December 2011 and 6 January 2012. Once their account has been activated, they can continue uploading and editing their entries until the deadline. There is no entry fee.

Images may be entered as single images or stories/portfolios in nine categories: Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sports, Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, Portraits, Arts and Entertainment and Nature.

From the beginning of December 2011 onwards, the entry rules, a description of the categories and instructions on how to enter will be available on the contest website in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. If you have further questions, please send an email to contest@worldpressphoto.org.

Contest judging
The judging of the contest will take place from 28 January until 9 February 2012. The results of the contest will be announced on 10 February in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and online.
