Fotoblur is currently looking for photographers who would like to become contributors to Fotoblur Magazine, Issue 11 (The RGB Issue). Fotoblur Magazine is a community based photography publication which has published works by many up and coming photographers including some of worlds top known talents.

Themes for Issue 11 (The RGB Issue)

Red: Images with a predominance of the color red or whose main subject contains mostly red tones.
Green: Images with a predominance of the color green or whose main subject contains mostly green tones.
Blue: Images with a predominance of the color blue or whose main subject contains mostly blue tones.

Schedule

Submissions start July 5th, 2011 and end July 31st, 2011.
Community voting begins August 1st, 2011 and ends August 14th, 2011.

How you can contribute to the Fotoblur Magazine project

First, join the community.
Then submit high resolutions versions of your best gallery photos for possible publication.

Submitted photos are voted on by the Fotoblur community. From top picks, editors make their final selections for publication.

Submission Requirements

Submit your photo as a 300dpi jpg file. Save your image so that the width is 7 inches or greater (7″ @ 300dpi = 2100px). We ask that you submit your images in high (80 – 100%) quality. Please keep the file size below 10 MB. Please refrain from adding borders, watermarks, or text of any kind.

Welcome to Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 in association with Canon. This week we launch Round one, Shooting trees, where the first-prize winner will receive a fantastic Canon EOS 60D with EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.

Whether you are a regular APOY entrant or have never entered before, now is your chance to submit an image and see if you can win one of Canon’s flagship cameras.

We’re looking for original, imaginative and technically well-executed images that explore the theme in an exciting way. We have included a table outlining the themes for each round, plus the closing dates and the issues in which the results will appear. In the first issue and online every month we will publish a brief explaining the criteria for that round.

Our judges will narrow down the images to a shortlist of 50, and will look again at the images and award points for creativity, technical excellence and how far the image fulfils the brief. The three images with the most points will win the top three prizes for that round. The top 30 highest scoring images will be published in the magazine at the end of the month and the scores from the top 50 finalists will be added to our league table. The names of the top 50 finalists and their points scores will be posted on our website after each round. The person with the most points after the final round will be crowned Amateur Photographer of the Year 2011 and win £5,000 worth of Canon equipment.

The Hungarian Institute for Culture and Art (MMIKL) calls amateur photographers of Hungarian citizenship or origin to participate in the digital photo contest “Travels Around the World – 2011 – Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands”, organized under the auspices of the Hungarian Embassy in Canberra and the Australian Embassy in Budapest.

The purpose of the contest is to share the visual impressions stored on digital photographs during travels in Australia and New Zealand within the past 5 years. The best selected shots planned to be exhibited in Australia, New Zealand and Hungary as well as in a photo album edited by MMIKL.

CONDITIONS
1.  Entries are invited from amateur photographers of any age, profession or country of residence. Entries are encouraged from applicants who took photos during their domestic or overseas trips and never have considered exhibiting them in public.
2.  The subject of the photos is not limited and may be a monument, portrait, event, landscape nature/animals, cityscape (close-up or panorama), macro-shots, emotional impressions taken anywhere in Australia, New Zealand or the Pacific Islands.
3.  A competitor may send a maximum of ten (10) digital or digitalized photos in JPEG format. The longer side should be 2000 pixels and the photo should not exceed 2-3 Megabytes. Each photo must be given a name in the following syntax: competitor’s FamilynameGivenname followed by a one- or two-word description or title of the picture. No other character should be used in front of Familyname because it makes impossible the automatic ordering. Manipulation of the pictures may only enhance the visual stress or emphasis of the original such as contrast, color saturation and temperature, cropping.  No modification of the original content is allowed, e.g., fantasy pictures will not be accepted.
4.  Entries must be sent as separate attachments to the e-mail address ausztralia2011@gmail.com . The size of any individual message must not exceed 15 Megabytes. If necessary, the entries may be sent over several e-mails with attachments. Giant and zipped messages are undeliverable and will not be processed.

5.  Photos entered must not have been taken part in previous Travels around the World contests, such as the 2009 – Australia and the 2010 Australia and New Zealand contest.
6.  Competitors must fill out the electronic application form that is provided by the organizers.  The information on the application form must be identical with that shown on the picture/s.  The application form can be downloaded from 15 December 2010 from www.mmikl.hu home page and then click on photo competition menu. Competitors do not have to sign the form. By submitting pictures they automatically accept the application conditions.
7.  Prize 1-5 will be photo albums valued at 5000 HUF (approximately 30 AUD) each and certificates.

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards invite photographers from all over the world to submit their work to be featured in the book Portrait and People and win B&H gift certificates.

There is no initial entry fee for this competition. Only those series accepted will pay an entry fee.

The theme

Portraits and any kind of image (lansdcapes, citiscapes, street shots, advertsing, fashion, etc) where people is predominant in the scene.

Both color and black and white (including duotones, toned, and all kind of alternative processes) will be accepted to be screened. All kind of processes, including digital manipulation will be accepted.

IMPORTANT: Please make a note that we require at least 3 images to be submitted in order to be able to do a deeper analysis of the work performed by the artist.

The selection process:

There will be two screenings.

First screening

Selection will be done by WPGA’s artistic and editorial staff.

The first screening will be conducted to accept or reject the submitted works. There’s is no entry fee to submit your series to the first screening, and you may submit a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 12 images.

To pass the first screening at least 3 images should be accepted. If you submit just the minimum allowed (3 images) all images will be evaluated as a body representative of the artist’s work. In this contest we want to have an insight of the work done by the artist rather than an individual shot; that’s why we’re asking for at least 3 images. It doesn’t mean that you have to submit a series or a coherent or thematic body of work. All images can be indepentent: a portrait, a street shot and a landscape are accepted. In the case of landscapes we requiere at least some figures displayed or signs or evidence of human activity.

Within 1 week after the reception of the images sent for consideration of the jurors in the first screening, submitters will be notified by email detailing which series have been accepted and which have been rejected. Together with the notification’s email a brief structured feedback will be provided.

Second screening

Selection will be done by Julio Hardy, WPGA’s Managing Director

Accepted images in the first screening will be included in the second screening and entered in the competition. Those works which passed the first screening will be exhibited for one year in the online WonderPick gallery, and available for sale.

During the second screening, 80 images will be selected to be featured in book Portrait and People.

Entry fees (only for those works which pass the first screening)

Participants in the second screening will have to pay an entry fee within 5 days after receiving the notification that his/her series have pass the first screening and have been entered into the competition.

The entry fee for those images selected (those that have passed the first screening and have been entered into the competition) will be the following:

$45 the first 3 images accepted; $10 each additional image accepted

Payment of the entry fees

If one or more series pass the first screening –and have therefore been entered into the competition- an email will be sent to you (whihc will include our feedback) as well as a Paypal invoice with the entry fees to be paid according to the calculation based on the images accepted to settle the entry fees. The invoice has to be settled within 5 days. Failing to settle the invoice in due time will cause that the selected images will be excluded from the competition.

The Paypal invoice can be paid with your Paypal account if you have any, or with a credit card (through Paypal) if you don’t have a Paypal account.

If the submitter resides in a country (like Bangladesh or Iran) that it is not listed in the Paypal countries’ list, he/she will have to email us ay support@thegalaawards.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Prizes

Best Image of Show (to be featured in the book cover): $ 500 B&H gift certificate

Runner up (to be featured in the book back cover) $ 300 B&H gift certificate

The Book

The book will be printed in softcover and hardcover edition and will have a price of $59 and $79 respectively. Purchasing the book is optional and there’s no obligation to buy it even it the artist has been featured.

When selecting the images to be featured in the book, jurors will select the Best of Show image and a runner up. The Best of Show image will be featured in the cover (and in an inner page) and the runner up will be featured in the back cover (and in an inner page).

Next to each image featured in the book, the name of the artist, his/her website address, and a short bio will be displayed.

The online WonderPick Gallery

All images featured in the book will be also posted in the online WonderPick Gallery for one year, as well as all images that have been selected in the second screening.

Being featured in the online WonderPick Gallery is at no cost for the artist, and he/she will receive a 50% sales commission. 10% of the sales will be donated to Save the Children. Once the artists has been selected to be featured in the online WonderPick Gallery, he/she will receive further instructions regarding pricing of the featured work as well as the extent of the edition available for sale. All images posted in the online WonderPick Gallery will be printed by WPGA and sold with a Hahnemülhe certificate of authenticity.

How to send your series

Size: minimum of 800 and maximum of 1200 pixels in the largest side

Resolution: 72 dpi

It is very important to follow these instructions (including the structure of the file name). Those images that do not follow the above detailed specifications might be rejected.

The second screening will be finished by the end of February. All submitters (including those who were rejected in the first screening) will receive by email the notification of those series which will be featured in the book, as well as the names of the winners of the Best of Show and runner up.

The book will be printed and ready for sale and distribution by the end of March, 2011

All artists with images to be featured in the book will have to send high resolution files (300dpi) suitable for publication before March 5th.

International Award

The International Street Photography Award is looking for the world’s best street photographer as part of the first annual London Street Photography Festival in 2011.

How to Enter:

1. Submit five to eight of your best street photography images from anywhere in the world.

The London Street Photography Festival defines Street Photography as:
“candid, un-staged photography which captures, explores or questions contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings.”
Street photography is perhaps more easily defined as a method than a genre. The results can fit into documentary, portraiture and other genres, but the key elements of spontaneity, careful observation and an open mind ready to capture whatever appears in the viewfinder are essential.

2. You will be asked to include:

* a brief biography of yourself (max 100 words) and a description (max 300 words) outlining the process and background of your photographic work
* a title (optional) for your work and caption for each photo

Invitation to submit entries for the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award’ photographic competition

Solms, Germany (January 12, 2011) - Leica Camera AG invites professional photographers to submit entries to the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award,’ an international photography competition. Photographers wishing to take part may submit their entries online from January 15, 2011 to March 1, 2011 at www.leica-oskar-barnack-preis.de. This year, the value of the competition prizes has significantly increased, with the award winner receiving their own piece of Leica history.

For the first time, the winner of the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award’ will receive a Leica M9 camera and a lens worth 9,500 euros (approximately $12,300) in addition to a cash prize of 5,000 euros (approximately $6,500). For the ‘Newcomer Award,’ open to all (aspiring) professional photographers aged 25 and under, the award has also been increased. The winner will receive a Leica M9 camera and a lens.

Competition entry conditions: An international jury awards the ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Award’ / ‘Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award’ to photographers whose unerring powers of observation capture and express the relationship between humans and the environment in graphic form in a sequence of up to 12 images. Entry submissions must be a self-contained series of images in which the photographer perceives and documents the interaction between humans and the environment with acute vision and contemporary visual style – creative, unobtrusive and groundbreaking.

The competition is a memorial to Oskar Barnack (1879–1936), the inventor of the Leica. From 1914 on, he increasingly used the prototype camera he developed, today known as the Ur-Leica, for photography. The history of photojournalism is closely tied to his invention, as, beginning in 1925, the compact and easily carried Leica cameras were instrumental in enabling entirely new and expressive forms of photography.

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards organize the second edition of THE JACOB RIIS AWARD (named after the Danish-American photographer, 1849-1914) benefiting Save the Children Foundation. It will focus in portfolios (minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 images) inviting photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements will be welcome. The Award is open worldwide to all professional and amateur photographers working with digital or traditional photography or combinations of both. There is no theme for this Award, and the images will be evaluated as a cohesive body of work (a theme or images representing the artistic trajectory of the photographer), rather than individual images.

The Award will consist in a cash prize of $ 3,000. A selected image of the winner portfolio will be featured in the cover of the Book The Jacob Riis Award 2011.

JURORS:

The Jacob Riis Awards will be juried by Chris Steele-Perkins, UK (Magnum Photos), Tim Anderson, USA (publisher Red Dog Journal), Larry Padgett, USA (founder and former Managing Director of The Center for Fine Art Photography), Sucheta Das, India (Photographer), and Julio Hardy, Argentina/Spain (Managing Director, WPGA).

National Geographic is once again holding their annual Photo Contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30th. For the past eight weeks, they have been gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to rate them as well. National Geographic was again kind enough to let me choose some of their entries from 2010 for display here on The Big Picture. Collected below are 47 images from the three categories of People, Places and Nature. Captions were written by the individual photographers. (47 photos total)

Unsafe Journey. A woman is riding between the railway carriages of a local train heading north from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Her luggage is tucked under the carriage in front of her. It is the month of Ramadan, a fast which culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr, a three-day celebration. Tens of thousands of people leave the city to go to their home village and celebrate with their families. Trains are packed and many who fail to get tickets before they sell out or can’t afford buying them at the black market ride on the roof of the train or, like this woman, finds a quiet spot between the carriages.
