The British Wildlife Photography Awards were established in 2009. The key aims of the Awards are to:

Recognise the talents of photographers practicing in the UK, while at the same time highlight the great wealth and diversity of Britain’s natural history.
Celebrate British wildlife, in all its beauty and diversity, through a collection of inspirational photographs.
Showcase the very best of our nature photography to a wide audience and engage all ages with evocative and powerful imagery.
Encourage discovery, exploration, conservation and enjoyment of our natural heritage.
Raise awareness about British biodiversity, species and habitats.

Entries must have been taken in the United Kingdom of Great Britain Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Images can be of native or migrant wild species. Also non-indigenous wild species that reside permanently in the UK. British wildlife subjects photographed in a studio setting or a captive environment are eligible provided this information is supplied when submitting images. Exotic wildlife photographed in British zoos, safari parks or similar locations, and domestic pets are not eligible.

The winning pictures and best entries will be included in a touring exhibition across the UK and a stunning coffee table book, published by AA publishing.

This may include, but is not limited to: inclusion in a book of winning and commended images; display at exhibitions; display on a web browser for judging purposes; on the BWPA website and on the websites of sponsors and supporters; for use in press releases to be distributed to national, regional & specialist press giving information about or promoting the competition.

Entrants also agree that the organisers can sub-license images to the media for reproduction in connection with the competition and exhibition only.

BWPA will make every reasonable effort to ensure that name credits are given to any photograph published in any medium.

Free usage of any photograph will not be permitted by BWPA, or any of its partners or sponsors outside of the scope of the competition and exhibition.

There is no plan envisaged by BWPA, or any of its partners or sponsors, to create a general commercial library of the images entered into this competition.

Commercial use of images not directly associated with the competition will be at the entrants’ discretion and with their permission and, on granting such permission, will be subject to a reasonable payment.

For any use that falls outside this remit, royalties will be discussed & negotiated with the photographer concerned.

‘beyondmemory’ is an open call which invites artists to reflect on contemporary photography and video’s role in perceiving history and collective memory. The project is based on an idea suggested by the curator Marinella Paderni, and is a collaboration between Fondazione Studio Marangoni and Celeste Network.

Theme
Memory has been for centuries a community’s natural repository of symbolic and mythical meaning; a combination of true stories and fantastical representations, which mixed, history with poetry, reality with art, artistic conjecture with collective unconscious, the universal with the singular. With the end of dogmas and grand ideological narratives, memory is no longer a producer of myths, rather it survives as the basis for a search of truth, taking up the role of instrument of knowledge, of historical production and verification of information. The idea that memory is repository of a single, absolute truth, has been replaced in our information age by the notion of many memories: micro-truths without universal authenticity which act on the knowledge and production of history. In particular, according to Michel Foucault’s view, photography has given birth to the idea of archive as a repository of memory and a fundamental building-block of the present.

“beyondmemory” reflects on photography and video’s role in the perception of history and collective memory, with particular attention given to the importance of archives and photographic documents in artistic research – a cultural phenomenon which the philosopher Jacques Derrida called “le mal d’archive.”

Archive fever is one of contemporary art’s principal themes. Photography provides another viewpoint on history, revealing misunderstood or possible ‘truths’, transforming traces of information and documents into visual monuments of our time, often creating their own devices and taking up other languages of expression. Works submitted to Beyond Memory can contain images as clues for paradigms, textual elements, photographic installations with archive material, sound fragments, the use of photographs which are simply found or tell a common story, are some of the forms adopted by contemporary photography to give images various levels of significance to history and collective memory.

Projects
All projects presented to ‘beyondmemory’ must relate to the theme proposed by Marinella Paderni. Each project can contain one work or upto a maximum of 10 works – containing photographs and/or videos (max 10 miunutes) – supported by a textual statement. Works and statements can be uploaded directly by artists from personal accounts in Celeste Network, and instantly published in the appropriate area onsite called ‘Beyondmemory’.

Who can Submit?
‘beyondmemory’ is an international call for projects, in which artists or artist groups members of Celeste from anywhere in the world can participate without limits of age, sex or profession.

Deadline
Projects can be presented directly online no later than midnight 29 February 2012.

Fee
30 € for each project (contains one work or upto a maximum of 10 works). The fee is payable directly online Celeste via PayPal before upload of projects.

Shortlist Selections
A shortlist of 10 selected projects made by a Selection Committee which includes Giovanna Calvenzi, Daniele De Luigi and George Tatge will be announced on 31 March 2012. The 10 selected projects will be exhibited in the fmsgallery of the Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence, Italy.

Production and Transport
Selected artists invited to exhibit their works in the fmsgallery, Florence, will be responsible for their personal travel costs, and all costs related to the transport of their works to and from the exhibition. Only works which are at the exhibition can be considered for the prizes.

Exhibition and Prizes
The three winning projects will be chosen by Marinella Paderni and announced on 15 May at the opening of the exhibition, which will last from 15 May to 12 June 2012. Following the announcement of selected projects, the curator of the exhibition Marinella Paderni will decide whether some or all of works in each selected project will be exhibited, having taken into consideration the nature of all other selected projects and available exhibition space.

Catalogue
A catalogue containing images of all selected works, as well as brief artists’ bios, and critical texts with be published.

Rights
Artists retain copyright of all works and texts they upload, but give Celeste Network the right to use them for communication and promotion purposes only: to create the prize catalogue or other promotional material associated with the prize, and in Celeste’s websites. Artists who submit works to ‘beyondmemory’ declare and accept that they are the authors of the images they upload and possess all rights to use these images, including musical scores if used. Artists guarantee that they have received permission and authorization, as required by law, from persons represented in their photographic or video works, or from their legal representatives. The organizer is not and cannot be held responsible for any dispute among artists and persons or third parties who might claim author’s rights over images of a work.

*Celeste Network has by Italian law to hand over to the Italian state 25% of prize money for tax purposes. This sum will be withheld by the organizer from each prize winner. A prize winner who is non-resident in Italy can request the Italian tax authorities to have his or her tax advance recredited in his/her country of residence, this is a suggestion and in no way represents a certainty guaranteed by Celeste Network.

Through A Lens: Vibrant!

Vibrant and vibrate have the same Latin root word: “vibrare” meaning to move rapidly and rhythmically to and fro. While vibrate means virtually the same thing in English, vibrant has additional connotations as it applies to brightness of light or colour, or as in how alive or energetic is the given subject – literally vibrating with life. “Through a Lens: Vibrant!” gives the photographer several options. Vibrant could apply to a light or hue in the composition, or it could apply to the subject, as to a person or in a street. It could even be stretched to apply to the process – check out the vibrance adjustment layer in Photoshop. Which definition of “Vibrant!” will you choose? For images juried into the hanging show, you will need to send a framed image no wider than 30″. When pricing your piece, keep in mind that the museum will charge a 30% commission.

A $50,000US worldwide search for the greatest photographers of our generation. It features both online and live events and delivers one of the largest prize purses ever offered in the photo industry. It is an exposure powerhouse that connects photographers with a global audience.

True to its name, The Open welcomes all photographers. It is a search across six continents with a simple mission: discover the undiscovered; rediscover the established; bring the best photographers to the forefront.

DETAILS
The Open is comprised of two separate events.

An online competition gallery of single images, where half of the finalists are selected by an expert panel of judges and the other half are driven by public voting, fueled by the major social media platforms. The Photographer of the Year and the category winners share $25,000US.

A mind-blowing live competition in which 6 invited photographers choreograph the best images of their careers into 7-minute productions. The selected location for 2012 is Vancouver, Canada and the prize purse is $25,000US.

ELIGIBILITY
The OPEN Contest is open to any professional, student, or amateur photographer at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of entry.

ENTRY FEE
Each submission must be accompanied by a submission fee ranging from $4.80 to $16 (USD) per photograph depending on the submission package purchased. These fees are reduced by 50% for developing economies.

The total prize purse for The Open Contest is $50,000 USD cash shared by the online SOLO competition and LIVE Event.

Only few weeks more to the deadline for the second edition of the international contest Donkey Art Prize 2011/2012.

The art prize, promoted for the first year by the Veneto region and others, is the contemporary art competition awarding the best international artist. Starting from this edition, together with painting and photography/digital art categories, there’s a new discipline for the participants: video installations. The winner of each section will receive a 5.000 euro cash prize and will exhibit his art work in 5 worldwide galleries.

The subscription deadline is February 15th, 2012, followed by the presentation of the 150 finalist’ pieces of art to the public through a series of exhibitions in Milan, London, New York, Shanghai and San Paolo. The Main Event, with the award ceremony, will be held in Milan in May 2012. All the locations that will host the exhibitions are of great influence in the art sector and, thanks to that, many artists participating in last year edition have already become pro.

Blindonkey Cultural Association presents now the novelties of the second edition: beside the cash prize of more than 18.000 euro and the possibility of presenting the art-work internationally, the association assures great visibility to every artist participating to the contest. We would like to remember also that, thanks to the Anonymous Marking criterion, each participant, either being well known artist or emerging one, has the same chance to be part of the 150 finalists and win the cash prize.
