Because women are the heart and soul of our magazine, Because we have always worked with the biggest names in Photographic Reportage, Marie Claire launches the Marie Claire International Photography Award.

To give the work of professional photographers, the recognition they deserve, this Award will, with the support of our international editions, reward the best photo reports about women.

Our international jury will select 10 finalists including one Award Winner, who will receive 5 000€ and a a Nikon D800 D-SLR.

The Award Winner’s reportage will be published in Marie Claire France and in several Marie Claire International editions. And to salute all of the 10 shortlisted participants, an exhibition of their work made in partnership with Artelier Vikart will be held in Paris. The reportage submitted by each participant must compulsorily be a photographic reportage devoted to women (other than any “fashion series”)

The 10 pictures must be from a single report dedicated to women (excl. fashion shoots).

Presenting the inaugural ‘Wira Foto Fest Award’, an inspiring photography event in partnership with Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2011 Festival.

Over 1,000 photographs will be exhibited in an outdoor environment throughout the parks of Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur. The highlight of the ‘Wira Foto Fest’ is the ‘Wira Foto Fest Award’ but nevertheless, an invitational showcase which includes student experimental, travelogues, commercial assignments and project proposals will also be exhibited.

COMPETITION /

Professional and non-professional photographers from all over Asia are invited to submit photographs, both commercial and private work, to the ‘ Wira Foto Fest Award’ in the following categories:

All submitted photographs will be exhibited at the ‘Wira Foto Fest’ photography exhibition.
From all submissions 20 images will be shortlisted and one overall winner is going to be announced during the grand opening ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2011 at Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The fee of participation is 10 US$ per submitted photograph which includes:
- participation in the ‘Wira foto Fest Award’
- participation in the ‘Wira Foto Fest’ exhibition including all production costs
- publication in the ‘Wira Foto Fest’ Book including all production costs.

EXHIBITION /

All submitted photographs from the ‘Wira Foto Fest Award’ will be exhibited in the ‘Wira Foto Fest’ Photography Exhibition as part of the Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2011 Festival. Its grand opening will be held on 15th of September 2011 at Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur, and will last for 3 months until the 16th of December 2011 unless or until been advised otherwise.

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards invite photographers from all over the world to submit their work to be featured in the book Portrait and People and win B&H gift certificates.

There is no initial entry fee for this competition. Only those series accepted will pay an entry fee.

The theme

Portraits and any kind of image (lansdcapes, citiscapes, street shots, advertsing, fashion, etc) where people is predominant in the scene.

Both color and black and white (including duotones, toned, and all kind of alternative processes) will be accepted to be screened. All kind of processes, including digital manipulation will be accepted.

IMPORTANT: Please make a note that we require at least 3 images to be submitted in order to be able to do a deeper analysis of the work performed by the artist.

The selection process:

There will be two screenings.

First screening

Selection will be done by WPGA’s artistic and editorial staff.

The first screening will be conducted to accept or reject the submitted works. There’s is no entry fee to submit your series to the first screening, and you may submit a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 12 images.

To pass the first screening at least 3 images should be accepted. If you submit just the minimum allowed (3 images) all images will be evaluated as a body representative of the artist’s work. In this contest we want to have an insight of the work done by the artist rather than an individual shot; that’s why we’re asking for at least 3 images. It doesn’t mean that you have to submit a series or a coherent or thematic body of work. All images can be indepentent: a portrait, a street shot and a landscape are accepted. In the case of landscapes we requiere at least some figures displayed or signs or evidence of human activity.

Within 1 week after the reception of the images sent for consideration of the jurors in the first screening, submitters will be notified by email detailing which series have been accepted and which have been rejected. Together with the notification’s email a brief structured feedback will be provided.

Second screening

Selection will be done by Julio Hardy, WPGA’s Managing Director

Accepted images in the first screening will be included in the second screening and entered in the competition. Those works which passed the first screening will be exhibited for one year in the online WonderPick gallery, and available for sale.

During the second screening, 80 images will be selected to be featured in book Portrait and People.

Entry fees (only for those works which pass the first screening)

Participants in the second screening will have to pay an entry fee within 5 days after receiving the notification that his/her series have pass the first screening and have been entered into the competition.

The entry fee for those images selected (those that have passed the first screening and have been entered into the competition) will be the following:

$45 the first 3 images accepted; $10 each additional image accepted

Payment of the entry fees

If one or more series pass the first screening –and have therefore been entered into the competition- an email will be sent to you (whihc will include our feedback) as well as a Paypal invoice with the entry fees to be paid according to the calculation based on the images accepted to settle the entry fees. The invoice has to be settled within 5 days. Failing to settle the invoice in due time will cause that the selected images will be excluded from the competition.

The Paypal invoice can be paid with your Paypal account if you have any, or with a credit card (through Paypal) if you don’t have a Paypal account.

If the submitter resides in a country (like Bangladesh or Iran) that it is not listed in the Paypal countries’ list, he/she will have to email us ay support@thegalaawards.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Best Image of Show (to be featured in the book cover): $ 500 B&H gift certificate

The Book

The book will be printed in softcover and hardcover edition and will have a price of $59 and $79 respectively. Purchasing the book is optional and there’s no obligation to buy it even it the artist has been featured.

When selecting the images to be featured in the book, jurors will select the Best of Show image and a runner up. The Best of Show image will be featured in the cover (and in an inner page) and the runner up will be featured in the back cover (and in an inner page).

Next to each image featured in the book, the name of the artist, his/her website address, and a short bio will be displayed.

The online WonderPick Gallery

All images featured in the book will be also posted in the online WonderPick Gallery for one year, as well as all images that have been selected in the second screening.

Being featured in the online WonderPick Gallery is at no cost for the artist, and he/she will receive a 50% sales commission. 10% of the sales will be donated to Save the Children. Once the artists has been selected to be featured in the online WonderPick Gallery, he/she will receive further instructions regarding pricing of the featured work as well as the extent of the edition available for sale. All images posted in the online WonderPick Gallery will be printed by WPGA and sold with a Hahnemülhe certificate of authenticity.

The book will be printed and ready for sale and distribution by the end of March, 2011

All artists with images to be featured in the book will have to send high resolution files (300dpi) suitable for publication before March 5th.
